The final SEPF Region 4 tour event of 2011 saw Peter Fyffe (Burghead) find some of the form that took him to the top of the rankings last year. Fyffe came through a very difficult draw to beat Adam MacLeod (Elgin) in the final by a 6 - 4 scoreline. This event doubled up as the inaugural Moray County Championship and 'Fyffee' was delighted that his name is the first one on the new trophy.
The first round of matches saw all of the seeds come through apart from number 7 seed and 2 time tour finalist Andrew Cormie (Burghead) who fell to Ally Grant (Elgin). Grant played very well to win 4 - 1. In the last 16 the seeds again came through, traversing some tricky match ups in the process. Alan Mair (Fochabers) came through against Alan Duncan (Elgin) 4 - 1 and Mark Bell (Elgin) defeated Ben Royan (Elgin) 4 - 2 in a close encounter.
The quarter finals saw Peter Fyffe starting to cue well, beating number 2 seed Adam Wood (Lossiemouth) on a decider 4 - 3. He was joined in the semi final by Mark Bell who overcame stiff opposition in Gordon Moir (Burghead), defeating him 4 -1. The other semi saw Adam Macleod, who defeated Alan Mair 4 - 2, and Tony McCallion, victor against Ally Grant 4 - 3, going head to head. This match would effectively be a play off to determine the top 3 places in the rankings for the season.
The first semi saw Peter Fyffe demolish Mark Bell 5 - 0 and march on to the final. He was joined there by Adam Macleod who the secured top spot in the rankings with a comprehensive 5 - 2 victory over Tony McCallion. The final was a good battle that was all about potting; very little tactical play was required. With the match poised at 5 - 4 to Fyffe, MacLeod somehow contrived to miss a very simple finish by his standards to force a decider and left a thin cut on the black for Fyffe to win the match and Moray County Championship. After some deliberation, Fyffe chalked up and stroked the black home to seal a well deserved victory on the day.
The final standings for the SEPF Region 4 tour 2011 saw Adam Macleod finish top of the pile and qualify outright for the 2012 SEPF Scotland team. Those who finished in places 2 - 9 qualify for the SEPF Scotland squad trial to be held later in the year.
A big thanks to all players who participated on the tour this year. The quality on show has been there for all to see and I look forward to an even bigger and better tour in 2012. Cheers for now!
